The CERAP was established in 1962 at the request of the Catholic bishops of West Africa to develop a center of Christian reflection on socio-economic development. CERAP objectives are to promote the establishment of a more just and peaceful society, as advocated by the Society of Jesus, and in general, the pursuit of all other missions likely to contribute to the achievement of its object. CERAP began as the African Institute for Economic and Social Development (INADES), with a focus on agricultural training. In 2003, INADES expanded and changed its name to CERAP.
