To the best of the Authors knowledge, studies quantifying the economic costs of smoking for Malawi cannot be easily found in the literature. This study aimed to contribute to meeting this gap by estimating the economic costs of tobacco usage using smoking as a proxy, via the documentation of the social and economic costs arising as a result of illness and disease linked to smoking. The research provides evidence to inform policymakers on the design and implementation of evidence-based tobacco control policies that are relevant to the Malawian context. In addition, the study provides information for advocacy and lobbying for improved tobacco control policies.
